In coming-of-age films, summer is often depicted as a period of freedom and self-discovery, but also as a time of change and transition. The summer setting serves as an ideal symbolic space to explore the rites of passage, personal transformations, contradictory emotions, and the friendly and amorous dynamics of this key period in adolescents' lives (e.g., Pauline à la plage, 1983, Stand by Me, 1986, and Moonrise Kingdom, 2012). Sometimes cinematic summers are also tragic and final, especially when friends see each other for the last time before parting ways temporarily (It Chapter One, 2017). The lecture investigates how summer is used in films not only as a narrative setting but also as a metaphorical space to illustrate personal and emotional developments of growing up.
