Businessman by day, composer by night: Charles Ives (1874-1954), an extremely wealthy American composer in 1920s New York, was renowned for compositions ranging from romantic songs to microtonal and avant-garde symphonies. The concert’s highlight is the collection of 114 Songs — a self-published anthology from 1922, spanning Ives’s entire creative period, from the drinking songs of the popular Yale student to romantic art songs and politically motivated dissonant protest songs, testifying to an extraordinary life.
