In the 17th century, several generations of Dutch or Flemish artists travelled to Italian cities and landscapes, preferably to Rome and the surrounding Campagna, to live and paint. From around 1640 onwards, some of them specialised in landscape painting. On site, the artists organised themselves into communities, the best known of which were the Roman 'Bentvueghels' ('flight'). After their return to the Netherlands, the 'Italians' enjoyed great success, as their works stood out from traditional Dutch painting.
This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to bring together the works of all the main representatives of the Dutch Italianate movement, who have long been overlooked. The paintings are part of a private collection in Luxembourg and have never been exhibited to the public.
