This novel depicts the last months of a Nazi maternity through the eyes of a nurse, an expectant mother, and a prisoner assigned to the upkeep of the premises.

Heim Hochland, Bavaria, 1944. In the first Nazi maternity, the rumors of war barely reach, everything is done to offer the newborns of the Black Order and their "pure-blood" mothers a harmonious environment. Young Renée, a Frenchwoman abandoned by her people after erring with a German soldier, finds refuge here while awaiting an unwanted birth. Model Nazi nurse Helga becomes head nurse after years of diligent work, tasked with caring for the pregnant women and infants; A Polish prisoner from Dachau assigned to maintain the premises observes from afar these well-fed women strolling with prams, longing to escape. However, the war approaches. The well-ordered operation of Lebensborn homes starts to derail. The shelter becomes a trap. What will become of them when American soldiers reach them? And what choices will they have left?

Reconstructing this disquieting harem in its historical reality, this novel offers an immersion into a Lebensborn sponsored by Himmler, aiming to develop the Aryan race and create future "lords of war." A gripping literary dive into Nazi Germany from the perspective of women.

Caroline De Mulder is the author of several novels, the latest "The Nursery of Himmler," appeared in 03/2024 at Gallimard (Collection Blanche). She is also a literature professor at the University of Namur and La Cambre art school.
