Contemporary textile art is a form of artistic expression that combines
traditional know-how and innovative exploration of materials and
techniques. It encompasses various practices such as weaving, embroidery,
knitting, crochet, tapestry and textile installation. Unlike art
classic textile, often associated with decorative or functional uses, art
Contemporary textile focuses on concepts, personal narratives or
social and political reflections.
Artists like Judith Scott, Sheila Hicks, Faith Ringgold and more
Liz Collins have pushed and continue to push the boundaries of textile materials in
creating abstract, narrative or monumental works that question
the notions of identity, gender, heritage or ecology.
These achievements which navigate in art and design, can sometimes integrate
recycled elements such as plastic or metal. Long considered
as a craft production with a "utilitarian" vocation, textile art knows
today an unprecedented boom. The spotlight on Sheila Hicks at
the Venice Biennale in 2017, followed by his exhibition at the Centre Pompidou
in Paris in 2018, marked a major turning point for textile art and offered it
good visibility, thus attracting the attention of museums, collectors and
amateurs
Our exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to discover the works of
two Luxembourg artists who explore this medium, thus allowing
to reconsider the place of craftsmanship and material culture in art,
by highlighting techniques often perceived as minor or
feminine.
Reiny Rizzi-Gruhlke uses various techniques, such as installations,
textile art and encaustic painting, to make one's voice heard
artistic. Through his work, the artist tends to promote textile art,
long marginalized, as a medium in its own right in art
contemporary. In his recent creations, Reiny manipulates shapes and
structures to create real textile sculptures. These forms
organics evoke contorted bodies, a deliberately
sought by the artist, who uses different shades of red and pink
to signify the chair.
As for Liette Hoffmann, member, like Reiny Rizzi-Gruhlke of the
artist collective Filum 66, she gave free rein to her passion for
painting while attending the art school of the original artist in Mettlach
Polish Izabela Butroni. Gradually, Liette's artistic expression
will evolve and move towards the use of threads and textile fibers.
Currently, she shapes cotton and mesh, crocheting,
colorful metaphors. Each achievement constitutes an improvisation, a
dialogue between randomness and reflection, between chance and intention, giving
birth to unique and vibrant sculptures.
