UniPopCiné Season 15 - Lesson 1: Film (People's University of Cinema)
Lesson 1: “Film”
Seeing and understanding a film: the motif as a path to analysis
By Antoine Gaudin (Lecturer in film and audiovisual studies, University of Paris 3 - Sorbonne nouvelle)
Film Conference punctuated by film extracts | in French | 60'
In film analysis, the notion of "motif" can be tricky. First borrowed from fixed arts such as painting and photography, it risks implying a simple transposition to cinema, forgetting its specificities, such as the art of movement and editing. We will therefore focus on the transformation of the motif in cinema, taking into account its unique aesthetic experience.
Another risk would be to reduce the analysis to only the content of the films, neglecting the forms, the creative choices and the staging. It is through this prism that we will explore the motifs in cinema, through a historical journey and extracts.
How does a "motif" emerge in cinema? What transforms it into a motif? What editing and staging? Does cinema favor recurring motifs (Wave, Window, Big City)? How does the recurring motif help define an author or a genre (western, fantasy, etc.)? Are the motifs only visual or do they also include sound elements? Can there be "invisible" motifs?
