This exhibition is a true journey through time, offering a detailed insight into Luxembourgish libraries from the 16th to the 19th century. It explores documentary history from a unique perspective, through masterpieces from the special collections of the National Library of Luxembourg. The exhibition highlights the diversity of historic libraries, ranging from monastic and ecclesiastical collections to private libraries of figures such as Pierre Roberti (circa 1566-1636) or Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld (1517-1604). The journey also emphasizes the influence of notable personalities such as Jean-Baptiste Halle (1748-1824) and Dominique-Constantin Munchen (1763-1818), whose efforts have marked the documentary history of the country. Special attention is given to printed books, often overshadowed by manuscripts, which are perceived as more spectacular. In this context, various aspects related to the material object are highlighted: the authors, the subjects covered, the dedicatees, the social groups who consulted them, the traces of usage, or the provenances. These data witness the value and usage of these precious books.
