Francesco LO BUE is a physicist and doctor of science. He is director of Libraries, Culture and Heritage at the University of Mons. In this context, he directs the University museum, MUMONS. He is very involved in projects aimed at reintegrating science and the history of science into the field of culture.
He also chairs the Astronomy Circle of the University, Olympus Mons, of which he is one of the founding members. With his team, he carried out major projects such as Foucault's pendulum at the Sainte-Waudru collegiate church and at Tournai cathedral, or even measuring the speed of light from the Belfry of Mons.
He has long collaborated with the team of the RTBF show Matière grise, which awarded him its Favorite Trophy for Scientific Popularization in 2018.
His work places him at the crossroads between researchers, students, teachers, the general public and the media: understanding and making people understand!
Lecturer at UMONS, he teaches special methodology for physical sciences and scientific communication; He is also in charge of practical Astronomy work as part of the course entitled Universe: structure and constituents.
Star taker. discovering the secrets of the astrolabe
A mysterious object, of crazy elegance, whose origin is lost In the mists of time And the light of civilizations. Fruit of Science and Art, the Star Taker the astrolabe is an astronomical jewel imagined by the Greeks and developed by Arab scientists. He will travel And be reborn on all the paths of knowledge, from Alexandria to Bagdad, from Toledo to Louvain, from Isfahan to Lahore. Over the centuries, the functions of the astrolabe have continued to multiply. But what could this extraordinary instrument be used for? To hold an astrolabe in the palm of your hand is to welcome the entire Universe into your hand, says an old adage. Why this almost mystical fascination? What if we tried to unlock some of the secrets of the astrolabe?
