What is “Awa Odori”?
"Awa Odori" (阿波踊り, Odori means dance) is a traditional Japanese dance originating from the Awa region (Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku) and whose history goes back over 450 years. Its festival, one of the largest and most famous in Japan, is held every year in August. Last year, approximately 540,000 people visited the festival.
During the festival, groups of choreographed dancers and musicians, called ren (連), dance in the streets, usually accompanied by the shamisen, taiko drums, shinobue flute, and kane bell. The performers wear traditional obon dance costumes and sing as they parade through the streets.
What is “Takarabune”?
