With CeCiL's Box, Cercle Cité supports local creation by presenting and showcasing the work of emerging artists and young artists from the Greater Region in one of its showcases on rue du Curé. This mini exhibition space, visible 24/7, day and night, offers a street-facing venue in the heart of the city to a series of original and ephemeral interventions from the field of visual and applied arts, aimed at catching the curiosity of passersby and questioning the collective imagination. The 34th intervention is entrusted to the artist Nika Schmitt and is titled moth. Contrary to what has been previously supposed, the moth does not fly towards the light but turns its back on the most intense light point. Trapped by instincts inherited from evolution, the moth ends up caught in endless loops around artificial light beams. Installed in CeCiL's Box, the electromechanical system « moth » (moth) contains the end of an endoscopic camera, which serves to tirelessly scrutinize the interior of the confined space. In circles, through the window, the system reflects the inner corners of the window, the texture of the dust, and sometimes the details of the street outside the showcase in real-time. « Like a moth flying into a flame, » the system is interrupted by the brightness, changing its movement pattern and lingering in the bright areas. By generating light at the top of the camera, it occasionally affects its own movements through its reflection in the window. The spectator becomes the object of observation while also being part of the system as a mobile entity blocking the original light source. The exterior light becomes the orchestrator of an endless kinetic performance inside CeCiL's Box.
