Exactly 700 years ago, in September 1324, John the Blind (1296-1346) led a coalition of four great lords to attack the city of Metz. They accused the bourgeois of the Moselle metropolis of practicing usury and being too arrogant. However, the coalition aimed to conquer the free imperial city. Numerous documents, including intriguing narrative sources, recount this failed war of aggression. John the Blind, along with his uncle Baudouin, Archbishop of Trier, are depicted in a negative light. Since the 19th century, the Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia has been considered a national hero in Luxembourg, but this has not always been the case everywhere: The War of Metz will serve here as a starting point to interest us in the ambivalent representation that John the Blind enjoys in the literature of the time.
