This roundtable discussion tackles a complex topic: what influences do the so-called 'Culture Wars', which have been ongoing in the USA, have on us and on our understanding of society? Extreme identity movements, radical positions, social divisions—all these are reasons for political and social conflicts within a society. Can we understand what underpins these issues? And question whether this is or could be mirrored in European territories? Very often, the background of such debates poses questions about what defines us as humans in a community. Are we a collection of particularities, where each difference matters, or are we rather a collective capable of encompassing this complexity? These discussions are becoming increasingly difficult when our shared humanity is put in the background and when everyone sees their idea, position, belief as the only truth. Are we just our identity, or more than that? When does this 'big picture' become a symptom of dilution and repression? When does 'my particularity' become radical and exclusive? The lines of division are blurred, and dealing with this subject is emotion-laden and filled with black-and-white thinking—hence, it’s increasingly imperative to address fundamental questions.Participants of the roundtable discussion include: Prof. Dr. Norbert Campagna (associate professor at the University of Luxembourg and philosophy teacher at LGE), Karin Weyer (psychotherapist and director of respect.lu), Prof. Marc Dietrich (professor of sociology at the University of Trier, specializing in media sociology and scandal sociology). Moderation: Nora Schleich (EwB).
