Whose Prophet is Artificial Intelligence?
A prophet is someone who feels called by God to proclaim truth and wisdom, admonition and future, and who is recognized by others as a religious authority. While prophets from Holy Scriptures are portrayed as conveying voices of heaven, in the era of A.I., they seem to have shifted from the invisible realms of the Divine to those of computing:
Artificial Intelligence is surrounded by almost mythological narratives that lead humans to unprecedented self-reflection. Are A.I. models our new prophets? Whose interests and powers do the models, their priests, and communities serve? How does the A.I. cult change our understanding and action, our natures, intelligences, and so-called reason? A.I. models can indeed open completely different spheres of world comprehension.
There are processes that can analyze and make biological processes observable in detail -- and perhaps make them more malleable in a next step?
In this light, "Being Creative" takes on a completely different perspective.
Quoting Günther Anders, the German-Austrian philosopher, we oscillate between Promethean pride and Promethean shame in the face of these systems' performance and their integration into our daily lives.
On 28th November, we will first discuss the basics together: What are A.I. and intelligence? Reflection takes us further: What do the prophetic voices between doomsday scenarios and new creation myths say about themselves, us, and the future? What ethical implications does this have for humans, our interactions with ourselves and nature? Might we need to rethink our understanding of the freedom of thoughts and interpretations, of actions?
Discussants are: Dr. Erny Gillen (ethicist and theologian), Dr. Robert Koenig (Vienna, philosopher and theologian), and Dr. Nora Schleich (philosopher and program coordinator at EwB).
Time for reflections and questions from the audience is planned after the discussion.
