Saint Joan of the Stockyards
Bertolt Brecht wrote his Chicago-set play following the crash of the New York Stock Exchange in 1929, which initially triggered ten years of economic crisis, unemployment, and poverty in the United States and then in Europe, extending up to World War II. Today, we find ourselves in a sort of perpetual crisis. The production centers have shifted, the working masses no longer live in the privileged West, and the benefactors are harder to identify; however, the exploitation of human beings and resources persists. This exploitation has led to further issues like global warming, wars, and pandemics—consequences of the same sick economic system. ErosAntEros rediscover Bertolt Brecht’s Saint Joan of the Stockyards for future generations. The music has been specially composed for the production by the Slovenian cult band Laibach and will be performed live on stage by them in Luxembourg.
