Domestic dances, popular in the years before dance halls were established in Ireland,
took place in the central room of the cottages, namely the kitchen. Tables, chairs, benches and other furniture were then pushed against the walls to make room for the dance in the middle. The constraints of this domestic dance in some way nourish the music, the songs and the choreography, the kitchen becoming both interior and stage.
