Lesson 0: ART
From music to cinema: the motif in the service of art
By Jacques Aumont (Professor Emeritus of Universities and Director of Studies, retired, EHESS Paris) Film-Conference punctuated by film extracts | in French | 60'
Cinema, the art of the motif: a proposition that is at the very least original, in its very obviousness. The motif is what pushes us to act, and gives us a reason to do this or that thing; but it is also a piece of a work of the mind, which can be repeated there, and mentally cut out. If we add that "motif" easily lends itself to a play on words with "emotional", we see that it is a term of interesting scope.
When we consider cinema as an art, the motif appears from three angles:
· For the viewer, these are visual and sound arrangements that convey meaning, a “path for analysis” (lesson 1), a “style transmitter” (lesson 4), or even a playful element (lesson 6).
· For the creator, the motif is the creative engine that gives birth to the film, whether through the intention of the author (lesson 3) or in the evolution of genres (lesson 2).
· In the history of cinema, it reveals recurrences, obsessions and significant returns, to be explored in a “wandering” way (lesson 5).
These multiple facets of the motif enrich our view of films and their reason for being.
