Conference - EU-Mercosur Agreement: is family farming thrown to the wolves?
The trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia) is still under negotiation. The European Commission is pushing hard to conclude it before the end of 2024 but faces significant resistance. Will this treaty, often summarized as meat-for-cars, eventually pass? What is a free trade agreement? What specific issues lie behind this, and what would be the economic, social, and environmental impacts?
This agreement with Mercosur would allow European businesses to access a market of 260 million consumers in South America by reducing tariff barriers and trade restrictions. Europe could then sell services and industrial products like cars and pharmaceuticals on this vast market, boosting trade... and greenhouse gas emissions in the process!
The EU commits to importing more products such as meat, sugar, soy, rice, and wine from Mercosur, which will inevitably impact the already struggling European agriculture.
To shed light on these questions, we have the pleasure of welcoming Mathilde Soudray, head of the Advocacy department at the National Center for Development Cooperation (CNCD - 11.11.11).
