Pieta - Remembrance of Jan Palach
In collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Luxembourg, we invite you to a memorial event at the Jan Palach memorial plaque on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of his sacrifice and subsequent death.
The event will take place on Thursday, January 16 at 12:00 pm at the memorial on Jan Palach Square in Luxembourg.
Jan Palach, a student of the Faculty of Arts at Charles University, self-immolated on Wenceslas Square in Prague exactly 56 years ago on January 16, 1969. He died from his injuries in the hospital three days later. His act symbolized a protest against the political developments in Czechoslovakia following the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968, aiming to awaken the Czech nation from indifference. Palach intended by his act to wake the nation from lethargy and incite it to resist the rising normalization.
