Our relationship with information has changed, it is one of the consequences of the digital revolution that we are currently experiencing.

Both the printed press and the audience ratings of television channels are decreasing year after year. Information no longer waits to be presented in the evening news or printed in the morning press: tweets on X, Facebook and social networks in general are on the ball. Even if traditional media are present on these platforms, rapid, abundant and accessible communication for all is becoming the norm. However, it brings a downside: fake news, disinformation, conspiracy theories, removal of moderators/fact-checking. A context that leaves room for hateful content and becomes fertile ground for far-right ideas and populism. There is reason to be concerned, especially since these same networks are owned by billionaires whose objective is profit and not democratic values.

Public service media seem to be a last resort to preserve journalistic ethics and the veracity of information. With all due respect to politicians who campaign via social networks. What about Belgium? The RTBF recently went on strike to denounce a context in which the fundamental missions and survival of the RTBF will be threatened by political decisions of the government of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, which will endanger its independence, diversity and quality. In January, the president of a party that oversees this same government fired off a broadside to denounce the two-minute delayed broadcast of President Donald Trump's inauguration speech, in compliance with the rules of the media cordon sanitaire signed by all French-speaking parties.

The links between politics and public service media seem to be an interesting issue to understand. History will surely help us see things more clearly.
