Bernd Ulrich has worked as a journalist since 1991. He has written for FAZ, FR, and taz. "If politics only suggests demands, citizens turn into an angry populace": this is one of the main statements of Bernd Ulrich, in collaboration with Hedwig Richter, in their recent book “Demokratie und Revolution”. The authors' central analysis is that necessary reforms in Western democracies also fail because it is claimed that a socio-ecological transition is achievable "without imposition". However, according to the authors, floods, droughts, biodiversity extinction, etc., are consequences of human action in recent decades. This devastating evolution can only be curbed if politics clearly identifies challenges, sets goals, and trusts citizens, while demanding efforts from them, including from the so-called middle class. Given the urgency of the crises, action must be quick. There is a need for change at a revolutionary pace and clear political language. The authors' reflections are not without friction. Indeed, according to them, "a contradiction has emerged between democracy and ecology, between the inevitable time pressure and the seemingly God-given slowness of democracy". Historian Hedwig Richter and Zeit journalist Bernd Ulrich aim, according to their book presentation, "to overcome this contradiction and show how a revolution necessary for preserving the foundations of our life can go hand in hand with the necessary defense and flourishing of democracy. To do this, they look back and forward. They question the hidden side of the history of democracy, on the often destructive social and fossil conditions in which our democracy developed in Germany and elsewhere. And they outline a future that also guarantees future generations the creative freedoms essential to a democracy." Speaker: Bernd Ulrich, born in 1960 in Essen, has worked as a journalist since 1991. He has written for FAZ, FR, and taz. After working for Wochenpost and Berlin's Tagesspiegel, he was deputy editor-chief of Zeit until 2023. This is the title of his recently published book, in collaboration with Hedwig Richter.
