Bretzelsonndeg (Pretzel Sunday)
Pretzel Sunday (lux: Bretzelsonndeg) is a celebration of love observed on the 4th Sunday of Lent. According to tradition, a man gives his beloved a pretzel (a pastry specialty made of puff pastry with a sugar glaze and almonds) as a token of his love. If the feelings are mutual, the woman gives him an egg on Easter Sunday. If she is not interested, the man receives an empty basket, hence the Luxembourgish expression "De Kuerf kréien" (to get a basket). In leap years, the tradition is reversed: women must give a pretzel to their beloved, while men choose between an egg and an empty basket.
