I propose a continuation of the hike on February 23.

The town of Wiltz, surrounded by wooded hills and tranquil valleys, is located in the heart of the Éislek in the Upper-Sûre Nature Park. The Wiltz is a river in Belgium and Luxembourg, a tributary of the Sûre and part of the Rhine watershed via the Moselle.

A central and eminently strategic location in the heart of the Luxembourg Ardennes explains the settlement of the Wiltz basin at a very ancient time. The name Wiltz is mentioned in documents over 1,150 years ago.

In the thirteenth century, the lords of Wiltz, seeking to establish themselves in a suitable location, built a castle on a rocky spur. The first fortification, located in the valley, no longer provided enough security due to the endless disputes between the Count of Luxembourg and neighboring lords. Additionally, the old site was too exposed to looters.

In 1631, construction of the castle in its current form began. The Thirty Years' War, epidemics, and famines delayed the work, and the central building was not completed until a century later, around 1720.

We will pass by the Witch Tower: one of the oldest parts of the castle. The name of the tower evokes sinister times as legend has it that it served as a prison for women accused of witchcraft.

After being private property and serving as a boarding school, the castle was acquired by the Luxembourg state in 1951 to establish an integrated center for elderly people.

In September 2012, the Château became a university campus and hosts universities and colleges, such as the BBI (Brookins Business Institute) and UBI (United Business Institutes).

After the introduction of compulsory military service in August 1942, a general strike against the occupier broke out in Wiltz. A lighthouse-shaped monument commemorates the victims of the general strike during World War II.
