Gilbert Trausch profoundly influenced the perception of Luxembourg's history for nearly 50 years. Discover how the University of Luxembourg preserves his legacy through various innovative projects.

For nearly five decades, from the second half of the 1950s until 2009, Gilbert Trausch played a decisive role in shaping the perception of Luxembourg's history. No other historian of his time had such a profound and lasting influence on the Luxembourg public's perception of their country's history.

To preserve the legacy of this iconic figure in Luxembourgish historiography, the University of Luxembourg has launched several ambitious projects. Among these initiatives is an online exhibition entitled “Gilbert Trausch – A Life Dedicated to History,” which allows visitors to discover Gilbert Trausch’s work and contributions in an interactive and immersive way. Around one hundred Zauberhefte, or magic notebooks, recording Gilbert Trausch’s research and lecture notes, are now accessible to the public. In addition, a virtual reconstruction of his personal library offers a unique insight into the intellectual environment in which he worked, allowing researchers and history enthusiasts to delve into his sources and working methods.

A small exhibition showcases a few precious books on Luxembourg historiography and literature from Gilbert Trausch's collection. At the same time, the presentation of several handwritten documents, such as his personal notes, provides insight into his work as a historian.

Finally, we invite you to discover how the majority of Gilbert Trausch's library has been integrated into the collections of the Luxembourg Learning Centre, thus offering students, researchers, and the general public the opportunity to access the collection of works used by the historian. These projects reflect the University of Luxembourg's commitment to presenting and making Gilbert Trausch's legacy accessible to the general public.
