This summer, plunge into the depths of Luxembourg's heritage with a visit to the Casemates du Bock 🪨 To explore these impressive underground galleries carved out of the Bock rock, you have two choices. You can visit them on your own or in the company of a super guide! Spend an hour exploring the passages that witness the fortress-town's past, and discover the many architectural and historical facets of this unique place.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, the Casemates are now Luxembourg's number one attraction! Yep, that's right 🇱🇺 

So put on your most comfortable walking shoes and come and explore this labyrinth of underground galleries, discover the dungeon of the old Luxembourg Castle, cross the magnificent arches of the Castle Bridge and finally return to the most beautiful balcony in Europe: the Chemin de la Corniche. Quite a program, isn't it?

And who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of the beautiful Mélusine flapping her elegant fishtail in the castle well. Longing for the days when she was engaged to the first Count of Luxembourg... 🧜🏻‍♀️

And it's not for nothing that they've been dubbed “Europe's most beautiful rocktop”. At different points along the way, you'll be spoilt for choice with panoramic views of the Old Town, the Grund district, Neumünster Abbey, the Pfaffenthal district or the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge... We can't wait to see the results of your photo shoot 📸

ONCE UPON A TIME... A LITTLE CASTLE

We won't let you slip away without a quick history lesson 🪖

In 963, Count Sigefroi erected his castle on the Bock rock, the cradle of the city of Luxembourg. By building his castle on this elevated plot of land overlooking the River Alzette, he enjoyed a strategic position. Indeed, it was one of the most envied fortresses in Europe.

It wasn't until 1644 that the Casemates were built under Spanish rule. They housed thousands of defenders, their equipment and horses, but also shops, workshops, kitchens, bakeries... Beyond the military aspect, mushrooms were grown and beer festivals celebrated. Yes, you read that right... 🍄🍺

Following the neutralization of Luxembourg in 1867, the fortress was dismantled and evacuated. But it was impossible to destroy the Casemates without destroying part of the city... so they kept them. To our great delight!

For your own safety, we've provided a brief summary of what you need to do to enjoy your visit.

We advise you to get well equipped (suitable footwear and appropriate clothing) to tackle the 391 steps with irregular landings, uneven and slippery floors, narrow passageways and shallow winding staircases. Don't panic, it's not like Fort Boyard, but it's better to be safe than sorry! The tour is not recommended for people suffering from claustrophobia, heart failure or who require walking assistance 🥾
