This year, guess who's offering...? 🇱🇺🥨
We are sure you already know this holiday but a little history won't hurt you! You'll be able to show off to some friends around a good Pretzel :-).
To resituate yourself, this superholiday takes place at Mid-Lent. During the Bretzelsonndeg, like the tradition wants to, the man must offer a pretzel to his darling (too cute). and if she accepts it, she will have to give back eggs to her darling at Easter. On the other hand, if she does not accept it (May the odds be ever in his favor), Chéri will be offered an empty basket (oooh :(!)
The widely used Luxemburgish expression of "de Kuerf kréien" (to receive a basket) which means "to be plated" would follow from this tradition.
And to change the situation a little bit, and to (sometimes) confuse your head a bit, in leap years, the tradition is reversed . These are the girls who offer a Pretzel & it is the guys who take care of the eggs!
So we are here to clarify your doubts: Madam, take advantage, this year February has 28 days so you'll be able to stay in bed and it's you, Monsieur who will run early in the morning at the bakery Fischer just for Madam :-)
Today, the Bretzelsonndeg is a Luxembourg tradition serving mainly as a pretext for gourmands to enjoy delicious Pretzels, we know who you are eh :-). Moreover, Bretzels are often honored in bakeries and pastries for the occasion!
This popular festival is celebrated as it should be : the Jhangeli tourist train is decorated with delicious pastry and accompanied by a small orchestra. This procession, composed in particular of the country's bakers and pretzel queen, criss-crosses the streets of Luxembourg-City by distributing free pretzels.
So, get ready because this year it's March 31, 2019 & let's go to Fischer :-)
